An Interview with The Conservation Alliance

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Josie Norris, Program Manager for the Conservation Alliance and one of HubNami’s many users in the public sector. At HubNami we provide free accounts to nonprofit organizations, allowing them access to the same high-powered tools used by our corporate clients.

The Conservation Alliance provides a platform for businesses, especially outdoor lifestyle brands, allowing them to cooperatively fund NPOs that are protecting wild places. Founded in 1989 by brands like The North Face, Patagonia and REI, this venerable organization has contributed over $15 million to grassroots conservation groups throughout North America.

Josie came on board two years ago with a mandate to create a comprehensive communication strategy – one that included updating the Conservation Alliance’s relationship to social media. The organization is committed to 100% pass through of funds from members to causes, leaving the bare minimum for overhead costs. They operate with a 2.5 person staff and have only a fraction of a staff position devoted to social media management. Sadly, this lack of social resources is typical for non-profits of all sizes, in all sectors. 

Nonetheless, under Josie’s management the Conservation Alliance has been unusually successful at turning a small investment into big results. One of her most effective strategies has been the creation of a monthly “Social Media Toolkit”, a brilliantly crafted spreadsheet that delivers 3 to 4 grantee stories per month into the hands of her members. She provides ready-to-use content, including Dropbox linked photo assets, for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The effect has been a 50% increase in her audience and engagement over the past 12 months, metrics a full time social media manager in any mature organization would envy.  

To create, evolve, and measure her content, Josie relies on the HubNami weekly report. After a simple set up to track her effectiveness versus partner organizations and to monitor the social footprint of her top members, she almost never has to enter the tool.

“To be honest, I just don’t have the time. There is so much great information in HubNami that a full time social media manager could dig into and I love working from real data, but there are a lot of other aspects to my job besides social.
